Leave boring routines behind you and feast on the spectacular scenery of Lake James, the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Diamondback.  Lake James is a year round adventure for boating, fishing or a great place to sit by the lake and enjoy a cold beverage at Bear Creek Marina.  Celebrating it's 75th anniversary this year, the Blue Ridge Parkway is host to special local events throughout 2010.  The slow 45 MPH pace allows time to take in the stunning views, historical sites or to stop for a waterfall hike!  

The DiamondbackNC takes you around 190 steep, winding curves on a 12 mile route ascending the Blue Ridge Mountains past Marion, through Cox's Creek and Turkey Cove, past Wildacres Retreat to the 100 year old community of Little Switzerland.  The top portion of the route parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway, for a short distance, as you pass the Switzerland Inn, also turning 100 in 2010, Big Lynn Lodge, Skyline Village Inn and Cavern Tavern and the Mountainview Restaurant where the route joins Highway 226, just outside Spruce Pine.  Pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway and travel to the Orchard at Altapass and on to Linville Falls to experience the Lake James Route for a 65 mile driving treat!  Maps and details on these two routes are also found at www.diamondbacknc.com.  

You'll find our Parkway communities of Little Switzerland, Altapass or Linville Falls between Mileposts 316 and 335 with access from Marion or Old Fort via Highway 70 to Highway 80/Lake Tahoma Road or Highway 221/226 North to Linville Falls or Highway 226-A to Little Switzerland.  

Fall activities begin with annual Labor Day celebrations in Marion and at the Orchard at Altapass followed by a bass fishing tournament at Lake James during the week of September 19th with the Smokey Mountain Bass Tournament!  Follow that up with a bicycle ride across North Carolina!  CycleNC's Fall ride begins with registration on the Biltmore Estate September 25th where riders head out Sunday morning the 26th on their way to Marion.  Choose to ride one day or seven, it's up to you!  October brings two county fall festivals...the first weekend in October Old Fort's Oktoberfest joins with the Mountain Thunder Car Show in downtown Old Fort.  Marion celebrates the 27th annual Mountain Glory Festival each second Saturday in October.  Both are free events!  Check out the details under the "events" tab of this website.
